I spotted this rockhopper penguin (or she spotted me) through the chaos that is a typical day in a rockhopper penguin colony. This one was on Saunders Island in the Falkland Islands. Nikon D810 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 260mm) ISO 1600, f/5.6 at 1/125th of a second.
After Peter died I sold our house and changed my email address and finally got a computer. It showed me old emails that had come to that address but I never saw them.. Imagine my excitement at seeing these today. I think I told you that I have all of the haiku-like comments that he wrote but they only really work when they’re with your powerful photographs. I think I sent you the picture of me and my daughters holding our Sean Cranes with Peter’s poems which my dear friend Christine presented to us at our memorial gathering for Peter in August of 2021.. Your images were an inspiration to him and were what buoyed him before and during the last difficult years of his life.
Thank you! I am forever grateful and excited to be back on the Sean Crane Photo of the Day list!

Definitely NOT messing with this one.
The rockhoppers are all attitude.
Awesome shot. That looks like one angry bird!
Ha. Sure does. They have such personality.
I think the scientific name for this species of Penguin is “Total Karen”
Hey now Louis, that cuts close to home.
Lovely!!!
Thanks Sue. Of the five species of penguins I saw i the Falklands, the rockhoppers were my clear favorites with their spirited antics.
Love this one!
Thanks Amanda. Rockhoppers are my favorites.
This shot is the definition of “the look”, which means: be afraid! Love, love LOVE it!
Thanks Laura. A rockhopper colony is full of great photo ops.
