This long-necked antelope is called a gerenuk. The name comes from Somalia and means “giraffe-necked.” We only saw a couple of these guys. The males have a bit of a thicker neck, as well as horns. When feeding on taller branches, gerenuks will stand erect on their hind legs. I was hoping to capture a picture of this behavior but the best I could do was this female staring intently at us with her diminutive little head atop that spectacular neck.
Oh yeah! That plane of focus enlivens the animal as it makes eye contact, seemingly ready to have a conversation with us. The color palette is particularly pleasing and offers a sampling of that unique environment at its peak fecundity. Using that green shrub on the left, a distant color contrast on the right, and selective focus, you managed to frame this guy while it stood in a field! Awesome, inspired composition.
I think this one is the sweetest looking of all. Beautiful coloring, pretty eyes,loooooog elegant neck, and ears way tooo big for the little head which makes her even cuter. Thanks for this photo I had never heard of or seen a gerenuk before.
