Continuing on with the monkey theme from last week, here’s another of Uganda’s many primates, and undoubtedly it’s most conspicuous, the vervet monkey. In fact, I saw many of these guys on my first day in the country in a city park in Entebbe, not far from the international airport. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) ISO 400, f/3.2 at 1/320th of a second.
If we’re going to have a monkey theme, we’ll definitely need a monkey theme song. A classic ’80s / ’90s ditty that leads us into the photo and sets our expectations. Something like –
Hanging in the park, playing in the trees
Life in our Vervet family is just as nice as we please
Yeah sometimes life is tough, when you’re a Ugandan monkey
But we’ve always got each other, when things get kinda bumpy
I don’t know how you ever ran this blog without me Sean
I haven’t had the opportunity to travel to exotic locales to photograph wildlife, but I have certainly filed for future reference that capturing the diverse species of other countries does not necessarily require safaris into remote regions. Many of your finest images, Sean, were captured within walking distance of your lodging or, as in this case, within a city park. Well done – never leave home without camera, lens & flash!

This would make for a nice painting. Is that its long tail in background?
Good question Donna. It appears to be, although there might be another monkey back there.

Thanks Sue. Yes, this was a fun day. I suppose the vervet monkeys are to the Entebbeians as squirrels are to us.
When they look right at you, as you’ve captured here, there is a real connection, a brief, shared understanding. It’s always a privilege.
