These two young Tasmanian devils provide hope for the future as part of the statewide breeding program to repopulate the species. The Tasmanian devil is currently on the brink of extinction due to the devastating facial tumor disease. The disease is highly contagious so devils may have to go extinct in the wild before the healthy populations can be successfully reintroduced. I just learned about this awful disease last night while watching the tele (Wild Australia?). Great shot, Sean. I am glad there is a program underway to repopulate the species.
They certainly appear a bit more devilish than they actually are. Their social structure is to nip and peck at each other while feeding. Unfortunately, this is why the contagious disease is so easy to spread from one Tasmanian devil to the next.

Thanks Sue. Yes, there is quite an effort underway. The devil is pretty much the face of Tasmania and they are doing all they can to save the species.
Are they an aggressive animal?

It’s a pretty gruesome disease called facial tumor disease. It eats away at their faces until they die.

Aunt Sue
Yeah, they are pretty cool animals. Hope they make it.
Wow, so sad! And these guys don’t look like devils at all, soooo cute!
I agree. They are cute little guys.
