This young male lion hadn’t grown his full mane in just yet. We found him lounging around in the grass one night in the Maasai Mara in Kenya. Nikon D850 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 135mm) ISO 400, f/2.8 at 1/4000th of a second.
Real nice shot. The lion looks relaxed, while it’s tail appears to remain “on duty” as though it’s job is to survey the surrounding area just in case another animal should approach.

I’m always amazed at the size of their heads. With the shorter mane, you can certainly see how huge his is.

Pretty much. He was lounging right out in the middle of everything, but always with a watchful eye.
They are amazing animals. So so wonderful to see them in their own surroundings. He looks pretty healthy–a sign of good hunting.
Yes, a strong young boy, big enough to be venturing out on his own.
