For Karen and I, the holiday weekend was all about relaxation down in the Florida Keys. But relaxation wouldn’t quite be relaxing if I wasn’t able to slip away for at least a few hours to search for wildlife. So early Saturday morning I got up before the sun and ventured into Everglades National Park where I eventually found this young, and very bold, barred owl. The owl seemed to hardly notice me as it patiently hunted for grasshoppers — and allowed frame filling portraits in the process. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/125th of a second
I was looking at a D-800 today and wondering how well it is working for photographers. By some of your photos, obviously, very well. Any comments on it from you would be appreciated. I aalso do mainly wildlife photography.
Keep up the great work
Hey Robert, I like the D800 a lot. I didn’t want to buy it. I was waiting for the D400 which never came. I like the extra reach that the cropped sensors provide when shooting with my long lens and I already had a D700 for my shorter lenses. That being said, I decided to go ahead and buy the camera and haven’t looked back. The files are huge and I have more freedom for cropping now, when my subjects aren’t quite as close as I might like. The concerns about having to use perfect glass and having to have perfect technique are blown out of proportion. I get very similar looking files to the ones I get from my D700, only they are three times the size. Of course, when you blow something up three times the size, it’s going to show a bit more imperfection. But size that D800 file down to the size of the D700 files are very similar. Hope this helps.

Oh my goodness. If that isn’t a nugget owl, I don’t know what is!
