White necked herons are a fairly common sight along the rivers of Brazil’s Pantanal region. I was in a small boat, floating quietly past while this one was searching for fish.

I am so impressed by your photos! I was sent to your site by a colleague of yours, Elaine McCormick. Elaine and I have been best friends since 6th grade….I teach 3rd grade in Chicago and share your photos with these kids, some of whom have never even been to Lake Michigan and spend their time watching TV or playing video games. They tell me it’s too dangerous for them to go outdoors.
So from them and from me- a huge shout out for helping us see other parts of the world and what’s beyond our doorstep. Thanks for bringing a smile to our faces everyday and a new appreciation for nature.

Is there a difference between a white heron and an ibex? And this white heron, BTW, has some black feathers. I don’t think I have evr seen a mix before.
Hey Mom, seeing as an ibex is a hooved goat-like mammal, I would say yes, there is a difference. I’m assuming you meant ibis. Although also a wading bird that shares the same habitat, they are quite different than a heron. Ibis are smaller with a curved, long bill. And this is a white necked heron. The “necked” part being the operative word. They don’t occur up here. We get the blue herons, and also the similar white egrets, which are all white.
I love Christine’s comment and I agree, thanks Sean, I look forward to my photo of the day every single morning when i get to work. Oh and by the way very funny on the Mom reply!!
Me too about Christine’s comment, and on a much smaller scale, I’m always excited to share your pix with my two city kids who I tell, “It’s not safe to go outside!” all the time, haha. On the other hand, I played outside every day as a kid but rarely saw such incredible sites in my suburban backyard. Thanks from all of us!
