This is a western grebe, the largest of the many species of grebe. I photographed this one in Moss Landing, California at a place called Elkhorn Slough. In addition to the occasional grebe, Elkhorn Slough is also a great place to see sea otters, harbor seals and sea lions. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 360mm) ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/400th of a second
That’s a wonderful shot, Sean! We see Western Grebes further north in the waters off California’s Humboldt County. I hope one day I can get a shot like this. You must have been virtually at eye level with that bird. Aren’t they funny looking, though!

Looks like he has a buzz cut!
Here eyes glowing red
Reflective ripples precede
A swift watery dash .
Beautiful and a bird I have never seen even a photo of before. Thanks Sean
Everything is shades of grey except those eyes. Perfect!
Wonderful! Grebes have the most unusual faces.
great pic. looks like he has his hat on, and ready for hard days work in cold areas of the north acrtic circle.
