This coyote was working on a carcass that was buried beneath the ridge line of the snow. Perhaps the coyote chanced upon an elk or deer that couldn’t make it through the harsh Yellowstone winter. Or, more likely, wolves had abandoned a kill that subsequently got buried beneath the drifting snow. Either way, the coyote kept a watchful eye on me as it feasted away. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (400mm) ISO 400, f/7.1 at 1/640th of a second (plus 1.33 stops ev)
Thanks Don. No, I haven’t used the 400 prime. I love the 200-400 because it’s just small enough to handhold (I shoot 99% of my wildlife images with this lens handheld — the vibration reduction works wonders).
what f stop did you used for this pic. ? I have had good luck, using 2 stops down with flim, and moving the histgram to the right, a little, and it don;t look so wasout or white in the back ground.

The coyote obviously saw me. And I’m sure smelled me as well. They are usually fairly timid toward humans and don’t really pose any sort of a threat.
