What appears to be a one-eared hippo, is just a hippo wiggling one of his ears, perhaps brushing away a fly. Shot in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/1600th of a second.

I guess I’m getting a little slow on the draw. It took me a half a second to “get” your Van Gogh reference! Clever Craner.
It’s a common mating habit for this species of hippopotamus to slice off an ear and present it to a prostitute hippo as a sign of their affection.
He’s still cute never really gave their ears a thought but they have them your photo is proof
Maybe he was winking at you Sean or sending a warning
They can actually twirl those ears around in circles. Pretty fun to watch.
That’s a swell shot – love that MIA ear!
Ha, yes, and glad to report that it’s only MIA in this photo.
Great “asymmetrical” shot!
Thanks Laura. I have lots of shots of hippos like this, but only one with the “asymmetry.”
