I was getting an interesting mix of fog and late day sun on this particular visit to Point Reyes National Seashore in California. The perfect time to go wide and capture more of the landscape. That’s a male tule elk lit up by the sun. Tule elk are the smallest subspecies of elk. A small population of them live at Point Reyes just north of San Francisco. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 280mm) ISO 400, f/4 at 1/320th of a second.
What a beautiful composition—the only thing truly illuminated is your elk, a small brilliance in an otherwise vast landscape. Point Reyes is really a beautiful place and we were not lucky enough to see these elk. So glad you did for us!
Me too Rick. Been awhile since I’ve been there but such a great place for a variety of species. And I took one of my favorite landscape shots there when the fog was obscuring everything but the very top of a cypress tree.

It really doesn’t matter if your subspecies is small, as long as you’re confident and do the best with what you have.

I have been to Point Reyes a few times, but the tule elk failed to appear. Nice capture, Sean!
Point Reyes is one of my favorite places. I’m hoping against hope the fires haven’t damaged it too badly.
