This Ruby Throated Hummingbird Would Like to Ask a Question
I had to be in Vicksburg, Mississippi for a few days for work. I was able to get out and explore on my own on Sunday and made it out to the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana. I didn’t see much — other than a bunch of hummingbirds. The ruby throated hummingbird is the smallest species of hummingbird and the only in the United States that regularly nests east of the Mississippi. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 210mm) ISO 400, f/4 at 1/2500th of a second, Nikon SB-900 flash
I hope you appreciate how good this photograph is. No, it isn’t from some far off exotic jungle, and hummingbirds are not uncommon but to catch one these guys in mid flight with an image so sharp I can read the name of his girlfriend in the neck tattoo…amazing. (In a long line of amazing photographs.)
Thanks Michael. They’re tricky to photograph, but can also be kind of easy at times. It’s like playing whack-a-mole. They are there for a second and then gone.
Cripes, I’m still trying to catch the Anna’s hummer summer after summer showing its gorget and here you go out and get the shot as if it were nothing in a few hours. But I did get a nice shot of a petunia the other day.
