Black bears can be pretty agile climbers. This young guy was doing a bit of a tightrope act on a thin branch before looking up and growling at the sky. This is another one from my trip to Minnesota back in May. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 90mm) ISO 800, f/2.8 at 1/400th of a second
These guys were in an area where they are quite habituated to humans — mainly, because food has been left out in the woods for them for years. If I came across a bear like this in another situation (a more wild area where they aren’t accustomed to humans — which I have on many occasions) the bear would most likely shy away. The only time a bear would attack, is if threatened or cornered, or if it associates humans with food, and is hungry enough, and it thinks you might have some hiding somewhere in a pocket.
Hey Gina, black bears can be either black, brown (or as they’re often called, cinnamon) or even a blondish color. Even amongst litters, bears can have coats of different colors. Brown bears on the other hand, are always a brownish color.

Ha ha perfect … he’s screaming for his mommy :o) another great shot Sean, keep them coming
You said this branch was sturdy, but I’m hearing some strange cracking sounds.
Sean I would not want to meet him on a walk in the woods!
Would they be more scared of us or we of them?

Hilarious shot!!! love it!
I’m confused. This is a black bear? But it looks brown to me….is it because he’s young?
