Spotting and being able to photograph a tayra was the highlight of my trip to the Ecuadorian cloud forest back in 2012. I had seen one before in Bolivia, but before I could get a shot, the notoriously skittish member of the weasel family disappeared into the jungle. Tayras spend a good deal of their time in trees, but will also patrol the forest floor in search of food. They are opportunistic omnivores and have a varied diet consisting of rodents and other small mammals, as well as lizards, birds, invertebrates, various fruits and honey. It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything from her. She used to be a model, right? I think she hosted “America’s Next Top Model” for a while? I watched a few seasons of that shows but it got pretty dull. I’m surprised to see Tayra Banks is living off of rodents in the Ecuadorian undergrowth these days, but I guess no one can stay famous forever right?
He has a sad, plaintive look about him. The photo is lovely with the “cloud” in cloud forest so prominent in the foreground, as if he’s trying to convince you he is an apparition.

Yes, that fuzziness is the vegetation the foreground and the misty air in the cloud forest.
