It’s that rabbit time of year again. This is a swamp hare, or swamp rabbit, a subspecies of the eastern cottontail. As the name suggests, they prefer damp, swampy habitat. These guys are native your parts down there in Florida. I was just glad that he/she allowed me to get close and down on the ground to blur out the foreground and background.
I thought “Swamp Hare” was a minor character on Dukes of Hazzard, like one of the Duke Boys’ friends’ who had giant ears and liked to drive real fast. I could swear that was what a swamp hare was.
I live near Aunt Sue in SW Florida. We actually have both cottontails here (the destroyers of my garden) and swamp hares. The swamp hares are a bit more brown in color, similarly cute, and not too impressed with golfers or their carts. Hope you had a lovely Easter.
