Looks like this striated caracara is lining that penguin egg up for a shot on goal. In fact, the caracara was having a hard time cracking the egg open and was kicking it around like a soccer ball. You can see the out-of-focus gentoo penguin colony in the back. This was on Saunders Island in the Falklands at a place called The Spit. In this one area of the island, five different penguin species can be seen, along with albatross and many other birds like the two species of caracara that live there. Thanks Laura. Definitely seemed to be frustrated with that egg. He eventually cracked it with the help of a skua (a seagull like bird with a dagger for a beak).

Hard to believe that egg was giving the bird’s talons a run for their money!
It seemed their talons and beaks were too curved. The skuas, which look like big brown seagulls, has more luck due to their dagger like bills.
This one is amazing, Sean.
Thanks Rick. I love when they seem to have no fear.
Very cool shot!
Thanks Amanda.
That is a tough looking bird. I love it.
I think you’re becoming a bird lover Shardae.
Just a great shot, Sean! He looks pretty annoyed, and I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of that!

No doubt Michael.
