I saw three different species of owl while in Guyana. This is a subspecies of the short-eared owl (Asio flammeus pallidicaudus) which occurs in Venezuela, Guyana and Surinam. Photographed in the Rupununi region in the southern interior of the country. Nikon Z8 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 1100, f/5.6 at 1/160th of a second.
Cool! I’ve captured the northern version at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge in Newbury, MA. They [and the long-earred owl] come south to Parker for the winters. Fun to watch them hunt over the fields and fight with the local northern harriers. Nice to see this southern cousin of the short-earred owl!
I’m not sure if I ever mentioned that my Mom used to live in Gloucester, so when I went to visit her I’d make my way up to Parker River. Saw my first snowy owl there.

My ear expectations were pretty low when I read “short eared” but I don’t see any ears. 2/10
