A family of southern sea lions head toward the water on Carcass Island in the Falkland Islands. These guys are also called the South American sea lion and the Patagonian sea lion. On the west coast of South America, they range from Peru in the north to the southern tip of Chile and the Falkland Islands and then on the east coast on up into southern Brazil. These guys look heavier than those we had occasionally at Good Harbor Beach in Gloucester or those down in Chatham on Cape Cod attracting all those great white sharks this summer. Is there a difference in size depending what part of the world they habituate?
There aren’t any sea lions on the east coast, only seals. In the northeast there are both harbor and gray seals. During winter/spring months, harp seals and hooded seals can also show up. Sea lions are found on the west coast of the US (stellar and California sea lions). And then in other parts of the world, like these Southern sea lions in South America. And yes, these guys are bigger.

Wow. They look so similar. I guess I will have to consult Google to learn more. Thanks for the lesson, Sean.
