Male southern sea lions live up to the name with their rather large and furry heads — at their furriest best when blown dry by the sub-Antarctic winds. This guy was enjoying the weather on the southern tip of Carcass Island in the Falklands. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (400mm) ISO 400, f/8 at 1/500th of a second.
Carcass Island is beautiful this time of year. Except for all the carcasses, which are bloated, smelly and everywhere. But if you just step around them you’ll have a wonderful time.
Whenever I see photos of these guys on land, they look like they just passed out after Thanksgiving dinner . The pop of yellow in the background adds some color drama to the photo. Nice. Very nice.

Spot on composition and capture. Makes me want to take a deep breath and take in the air. Oops, not as great here as down there. 🙂
