Not much in the wild is cuter than a baby elephant. This little guy was only a few months old according to our guide. They believe that its shortened trunk is either from a predator, or some sort of birth defect. The elephant to the right was actually one of the smaller members of the herd, so you can get an idea of just how tiny the baby is. The little trunk is dark because it was wet from drinking water. Hi Lourdes,
This elephant is in the wild, living in the area of the Linyanti Concession in northern Botswana. He/she is part of a large herd. True to the nature of elephants, the larger members of the herd seemed to be keeping the baby somewhat surrounded (although it doesn’t look like it in this picture). This elephant will be at a disadvantage, but the guides seemed to think that it will find a way. There are only two camps that exist within this concession and they are owned by the same company — Kwando. The camp I was at was called Kwando Lebala. Their website is http://www.kwando.co.za.
Excellent photo Sean and what a moment to see this little darling. Amazing how nature can heal itself, with support from the herd, I am sure this little one will adapt to it’s handicap.
Sean you bring so many incredible things to us – Mother nature will provide and hopefully this baby will survive

Beautiful image – but sad story. Can’t help but wonder how the little guy will feed himself without a trunk as he grows.
Ohhh so adorable. Awesome photo. 🙂
I love elephants! This is a beautiful photo! I know this little guy will find a way to adapt & survive, because that’s what nature does! 🙂
I can’t. This is just too much for me it is so cute!!
OMG this is insanely cute. Me and Jamie are freaking out over here.
OMG OMG OMG, this is the cutest thing ever. I want one.
Could you tell me where this baby elephant is? Is he/she in a sanctuary, we would like to donate towards her care.

Poor sweetie. I hope it has a long, peaceful life as all elephants deserve.
