I captured this short eared owl just as it was about to land on those sticks in the ground. It had been out hunting for voles (and sparring with the northern harrier hawks). Click below to hear its call. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/1000th of a second Short Eared Owl Call
Thanks Phyllis. When you stay in the same place for long enough, eventually something happens. This was after about 8 hours at this location. The tricky part is staying alert for when the action finally does materialize.
Yes, you certainly have staying power! I find going to the same spots over and over again always yields something different and/or unexpected. We had quite a few spottings of short eared owls this winter in western MA. It wa a highly erruptive year for birds from the cold north. Fantastic shot. The action in the wingstretch showcases the beautiful plumage. Love this!
Oh how I wish I was there what a beautiful owl. I love the sound he makes, I kept playing it over and over. I’m going to play this at night before I go to sleep. It”s very soothing, for me anyway. Yet again I bow to you for such patience and persistence.
