I mentioned in a recent post that nothing beats the keel-billed toucan for its brilliant color amidst all the green of the Central American rainforest. The scarlet macaw, however, sure does come close. These large parrots are adorned with a generous amount of all three primary colors — red, yellow and blue. Some individuals even have a bit of green mixed in. This guy was feeding on figs, high in a tree along the coastline of Drake Bay in Costa Rica. Beautiful! Southwick’s Zoo in Southwick, MA has a few Macaws [the blue and gold Macaw and the blue throated Macaw]. They sit on perches under a canopy with no cage. You can stand there and just watch them. They are so large and beautiful. It’s hard to imagine seeing them fly in the wild. I’m at least grateful for such beautiful and well maintained zoos like this, where we can see wildlife, especially for those of us who can’t travel extensively.

It is unreal – would love to see these birds one day with my own peepers.
