There are twenty seven species of ibis in the world. None, however, are as spectacular as the scarlet ibis. To see flocks of these brilliantly plumed red birds coming in to roost was quite a sight. They lit up the green mangrove islands of Trinidad’s Caroni Swamp like some sort of giant Christmas hedge. During the day, they feed along the northern shores of Venezuela, but come sunset, they return to Trinidad, providing a nightly spectacle of color. Omigod!!!! And I get excited when I see the common male Cardinal in my backyard. I would LOVE to see these gorgeous scarlet birds. I will never look at the white ibis here the same way again.
This photo underscores why I have often thought of birds as nature’s Christmas tree ornaments. Oh, to see such a sight! Thanks for bringing this stellar image to us, Sean!
I was born in Trinidad, but left for the USA when I was 5 years old. This photo brings back some particularly fond memories for me. I love birds, especially Ibises and Flamingos. There’s just something about their color and lines. 🙂
Wow! Amazing!! I’m with your mom, I get all excited about the cardinals in my yard too, seeing these spectacular birds would be amazing! $300 for a flight to Trinidad, that is also amazing!! Cool!

Hey Michael, mostly all red. A few red and black ones mixed in and a few with a bit of white.
Thanks so much for sharing images I couldn’t capture myself, wonderful!
Thanks Claudia, glad you like this one. I have a bunch more that I’ll have to post in the future. Wanted to get the wide shot of the flock.
