Saw whet owls are strictly nocturnal and they sleep for most of the day. I waited a long time for this little guy to wake up… yawn… do anything. After what seemed like a few hours, it finally shuffled around a bit on the branch before giving itself a good scratch. The eyes never opened. It’s amazing how oblivious they are, even with hoards of photographers around. I viewed one at Parker River last fall on the Hellcat trail, but had more branches to contend with then you did here. The owl wouldn’t budge. Your patience paid off with a beautiful shot.

Amazing those owls.
I literally let out an audible “awwww” when I saw this guy. It’s like he knew you were there and was waving “hi, Sean Crane!”
