Here’s one for the duck fans out there. As far as ducks go, the ruddy duck is one of my favorites, especially males like this one in his summertime breading plumage, which includes the chestnut feathers and sky blue bill. Photographed at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, California. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/5000th of a second.
His beautiful blue bill is the same shade of blue as those feet on the booby footed whatever. Was that also a duck? It looks like one walked in a can of Sony and the other stuck his nose (bill) in it. How curious!
Hey Mom, no, boobies are considered sea birds, not ducks. But yes, that color is quite similar. Also, the same color as the vervet monkey’s scrotum, if you recall.
Blue bills are the blue bloods of the duck world. You know the kind: They’ve got some ridic name like Jacob Hastings Von Peabody the Third and they’re always talking about the prestigious prep schools they’ve pooped on. They’re not really my type. Give me a cold beer and a few yellow bills any day and I’m at home.
Thanks Rachel, yes, I have gotten the male northern pintails. Lots of them at Bosque Del Apache when I visited to photograph sandhill cranes. I’ll have to post soon.
Sean, you and your mom crack me up. I love the banter, it reminds me of Mike Rowe & his mom Peg’s podcasts on The Way I Heard It.
As I commented on FB you should put all of these amazing photos together and make a ‘Critters from Around the World’ or something, slide show screen saver‼️

Sony should be paint. Auto correct is going way off the subject these days!
I have taken a few photos of a ruddy duck, but his bill was not nearly the brilliant blue that you captured. Well done, Sean!
Thanks Sue. The bills intensify in color when the ducks are breeding in the summer.

You always nail the animal names Louis. Nice work.
Very nice! I am a huge duck fan. They are one of my favs, too, but #1 for me is the male northern pintail. Have you gotten one of those?

That blue bill is proof that Mother Nature often surprises us with something we don’t expect, making an ordinary duck not so ordinary!
That’s for sure Laura.

Ha, yeah, my Mom is a character. Hi Mom. I’ll have to check out the Mike Rowe podcast.
