Here’s another shot of the white rhino mother and calf that we saw our first night in Nairobi National Park. From the ground level perspective, the calf looks almost as big as the mother. Nikon Z8 with Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens (at 69mm) ISO 2200, f/5.6 at 1/640th of a second.
That’s a fine capture, Sean! It looks as though they were running straight at you & they were gaining on you. A quite remarkable image given the size of the creatures & the potential for a close encounter that, fortunately, did not occur.
Thanks Sue, this is another shot where I was able to dangle the camera over the side of the vehicle and get it on the ground thanks to an L bracket and inverted tripod. They were just looking for a better spot to eat grass. And yes, that first night gave us great light and skies.
Overheard at the Rhino March:
“What do we want!?!?!”
“NOT TO BE EXTINCT!”
“When do we want it!?!?!?”
…
“Guys, hey – guys? Where did everyone go? Oh shit…”
Oh, to be in such close company of these amazing and hunted creatures.! So grateful they are protected in some of these African parks. Spectacular action shot of creatures most people don’t get to get close to in the wild. On our safari, we saw only one from a great distance. Kudos!!

Egret in the middle! I agree about the sky.

Not only is the composition spot on, including ‘the egret’ in the center, but the sky, oh the sky, really makes the shot!
Thanks Rachel. Always nice to get light and sky like this on the first day.
The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber.
No doubt Joel. Hemingway-esque for sure.
