I’m always reluctant to post birds because I know I have a lot of subscribers who much prefer the fur to the feather. In fact, I’m traditionally a fur over feather type myself, but lately, I’ve really been embracing the birds. This is a shot I took a couple of years ago just after a client meeting in Orrville, Ohio. After the meetings wrapped I headed north to Cuyahoga Valley National Park where I captured this red-bellied woodpecker amidst the red of autumn oak leaves. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/500th of a second
His head is red, not his belly! How did he get named “red-bellied”? I’m a flower fan first and foremost but I really enjoy the furry and feathered friends as well.
Any bird with a sharp beak I wouldn’t call “white bellied”…. And of your picture, wether fur or feather, always a pleasure. Thanks, and I hope to see a great many more. John
Thanks Amanda. The bird thing has become a bit of a joke with a few of my work colleagues who give me a hard time when I don’t post a cuddly baby mammal. But I’m even starting to turn them into bird fans (like Shardae, who commented above).

I love taking photos of birds and this one is super nice, Sean! Feel free to offer up images of feathered fauna any day.
Thanks Sue. Birds used to be a bit of an afterthought for me, but I now find myself traveling to certain locations just for the birds.
Great photo. Such a beautiful bird.

just kidding. Woodpeckers are cool, and I like the touches of red/coral in this one!

A bit of an explanation on the name is here.
