The ratel is more commonly known as the honey badger. My guide knew of a spot where a few of them were visiting every afternoon. So we built a makeshift blind out of old boxes and I crawled inside and waited. About an hour later (after photographing all sorts of birds that stopped by) the honey badger finally arrived. I was able to get quite a few nice low angle shots before he/she moved on. Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/1250th of a second.
Great shot! I was watching Wildwatch Live safari today and one of the guides found mom and baby honey badgers. The guide was over the moon with the sighting. Unfortunately, honey badgers ate some meerkats a couple of days ago in the same area. If you haven’t seen the 2xday livestream safaris – take a look. They are terrific. Four guides and locations – always something going on.
I loooove thee guys!! There’s just something about a honey badger you’ve got to like: they look a bit cuddly and relaxed, but do not mess with them!! I’d like to root for a football team with the honey badger as their mascot— “GO Honey Badgers”!!
ps. Thanks for all your effort to get this shot.

How I love their faces. We have a few at the Naples Zoo and I always spend time watching them scurrying around.
Yeah, this one was fun to photograph, although he/she got a bit close a few times.
Great shot. Love all your photos. Btw, where was this honey badger shot taken?
Ironically the one thing honey badgers really do care about is that people call them by their correct name, Ratels.
True. They can be sensitive with that.

Thanks Mary. I’ll take a look.

Thanks Laura. I was on a mission to get decent shots of these guys and it all worked out.
Lovely image, Sean!
Thanks Sue.
Great find and photo. I’m sure not many people see these critters.
They can be elusive.
