Aracaris are in the toucan family. Not quite as impressive of beak, but almost. This chestnut-eared aracari landed on a branch just outside the lodge I was staying at in Brazil’s Pantanal, allowing me to capture a close up portrait. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 800, f/5 at 1/1600th of a second.
Is the chestnut-eared Aracari the spokesbird for any kind of breakfast cereal? Or it that just Toucans? I’m really only interested in birds that have endorsement deals with brand-name kids cereals. Like even if this guy was the spokesbird for a knockoff brand like “Fruit Rings” or “Aracari-Os” I still wouldn’t be interested.
Really beautiful coloring and beak detail. I wonder who would win the battle between toucans and hornbills?! Both impressive birds with very impressive beaks. It’s great to have the camera ready for surprise moments like this one.
So Sean, do birds have ears? I suppose they must in order to hear, but it never occurred to me because we can’t see them sticking out from their heads. Are they just flat against the head? This beauty takes its name from the color of its ears! I learn something every day from your posts!

I like its coloring.
What a striking bird! How lucky could you get, Sean, to find this beauty perched just outside your lodge?
Stunning bird. Not being chosen for a cereal box is very classy.
