While hiking through the swamp in southwest Florida last month I spotted this pileated woodpecker deep in the woods. I was able to find an opening in the thick foliage to capture what looked like some fairly impressive pecking. Nikon D500 with Nikkor 500mm PF lens, ISO 1600, f/5.6 at 1/500th of a second, Godox V860iii fill flash.
Awesome! The pileated woodpecker is an amazing bird. It’s at the top of my list of domestic birds I hope to someday capture with my camera. Nice shot, Sean!
Okay okay, i see where this is going. You’re going to try to stump me with the old “how much wood could a woodpecker peck if a woodpecker could peck wood?” Let me just stop you right there. The answer is that if a woodpecker could peck wood (which it can, clearly) then a woodpecker would peck a peck of wood (which is approximately 2 dry gallons, or a quarter bushel.)
Rachel is right — they are loud! When they are hacking away at a tree they sound like someone hammering, and their call reminds me of the loud wild sounds of African birds. And then they swoop past and your jaw drops at their size and beauty. This is a great photo.

I’ve photographed this one. It’s not only the largest woodpecker around, it’s also the loudest! Great shot!
What a gorgeous photo!!!
