Butterflies in the genus caligo are commonly called owl butterflies because of the large spots on their wings that resemble the eyes of an owl. I saw quite a few of these butterflies in the cloud forest of Ecuador, but only this one that appeared to have a tear running from the eye. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 105mm macro lens, ISO 800, f/6.3 at 1/400th of a second (-0.33 ev)
From this close it is difficult to know what it is…could be a jungle cat of some kind. I take it the “tear” is part of the butterfly’s markings….very clever Craner.
Thanks Don, if you’re ever in the market for something a bit smaller, you can see info on prints at this link: https://seancrane.com/prints/. Although the 8 x 12 foot size might be a bit difficult. With the resolution of the D800, however, it might look pretty cool.
Sean, when I was about 10 years old, my brother and I were “beer & sugaring” for moths in a forest in southeastern Wisconsin. It was early August, probably 1972. I caught an Owl Wing, I think my brother identified it as Caligo Memnon, I think from Mexico. He was all ragged and tattered, likely getting caught-up in 24 to 36 hour prolonged mid-level southerly sub-tropical jet stream. It brought him all the way up to us in Wisconsin. It was quite a find nevertheless. rjk

Lovely. You’ve got a great eye for these things. 🙂

Wow! Awesome. How much for an 8- x 12-foot print?
