A mallard drake takes a look beneath the surface. Photographed in British Columbia just outside of Vancouver. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 340mm) ISO 800, f/4 at 1/1000th of a second.
The water piled up on its foot is neat, 1/1000 sec shows that I guess! Btw it’s a mallard (orange legs, curly tail, blue speculum…), also a widely distributed species.
You’re quite obviously right. Thanks Scott. I had a few shots of mallards mixed in with my northern pintail folder and failed to look closer. Will correct.
Mallards are such beautiful ducks. They are among my favorites. Scott’s observation abut the water piling up on that one foot is spot on – I would have missed it had he not spoken up!
Yeah, I like them too but rarely post because they are so common. Need to get over my exotic species fixation (of course, spending the last six months at home will do that).
