It’s been quite a while since I posted a mountain gorilla. I visited Uganda back in 2009 when I was told that there were only about 700 left in the wild. Since then their numbers are up slightly (depending on who is doing the counting) to almost 800. Let’s hope the trend continues. I’ve also seen another count that only has them at 600, so who knows how many are really out there. The point is, not many, so I was thrilled to spend about an hour in the presence of a very large troop of 23 individuals. By my very limited mathematical abilities, that comes to about 3.2% of the world’s total population — right there with me — in one small corner of the Ugandan rainforest. Pretty amazing. Great shot, Sean. Experience of a lifetime. We saw Mountain Gorillas in then-Zaire in 1988 (in the film days). I’ll never forget it. I wish I had taken more pictures.
Thanks Rick. Yeah, there are so many places to see and so many creatures to photograph, but I really want to get back sometime soon to see mountain gorillas.
This has to be one of my favorites of all the photographs you’ve posted here on your blog. The look in that youngsters eyes is … words are inadequate. Thanks so much for sharing your talent with us and giving us such wonderful glimpses into this amazing world we share with such a diverse variety of creatures!!
Sean, always keep your sense of wonder and awe for all God’s beautiful creatures you are privileged to see and photograph. It is your reverence and respect for wildlife that makes your pictures so very special. You are able to communicate to your followers, in very concise language and spectacular photographs, what most of us will only experience through your daily blog. Good job!
“Pretty amazing” doesn’t do justice to this photograph. Well done, Sean. I may never get the opportunity to see one of these gorgeous creatures in person, but my life and the lives of countless others are certainly enriched by your images, the images of other wildlife photographers and those special films we often get to see that bring “all God’s creatures” into our livingrooms. My thanks!

Certainly a trip worth repeating. But I agree, too many places, not enough time.

Thanks Karen. The hour I spent with these gorillas was certainly one of my top wildlife experiences every.
So sad we are destroying these magnificent and humanlike creatures. My favorite pic.
No doubt Tom. Thanks.

Thanks Alan.
If this photo doesn’t make you feel all warm and cozy inside, then nothing can. Very touching!

Thanks Sue. So many awesome creatures that we share the earth with. We need to get better at the sharing part though.
Mothers & Babies always winners
Such a shame they are so endangered
I know. Let’s hope all the conservation efforts pay off.
