If Game of Thrones starred monkeys, I imagine they’d be monk sakis. These guys are my new favorite monkey species with their thick, furry coats and troubled expressions. They are shy monkeys and spend most of their time high in the trees. In fact their existence takes place entirely in trees and they never come to the ground. This monk saki, however, dipped below the canopy for a closer look at our canoe, just before a downpour. Monk sakis live only in a small territory that spans a bit of northwestern Brazil and northeastern Peru. More on these guys in future posts. Learned something this morning – I now know Monk Saki. Helps with future Jeopardy episodes. Thanks for keeping me entertained and informed when I open my email in the am.
Is his fur matted? Looks like running a comb through it might be a problem! And isn’t it warm where he lives’? He looks like he’s ready for the frozen tundra.
Always love reading about your new friends .
Definitely this would be the Game of Thrones monkey. If there were ever to be a monkey that was having an incestuous power-relationship with it’s sister, it would be this monkey and no other.
My first thought was that this is the Tree Yeti of the Amazon Rain Forest. And he looks grumpy, not to be messed with. So glad you got to see such a remarkable and startling looking creature, And happier still that we get to see him too!
What a wonderful creature. I was really surprised to find out they are only 12-20” long! What a find, to see one in the trees. This now surpasses the 3-toed sloth as my favorite creature! …….well, may it is a tie…
No doubt Joan. I was surprised as well to hear that they are that small because they certainly didn’t look it when I was photographing them. They looked like fairly large monkeys. Must be all that hair.

To say the least. I was obsessed with these guys.

Ha, thanks Bill. I really wanted to see this species last time I was there and was glad to see them on this return trip.

Yes, quite warm. But apparently not too warm for these guys to have all that fur.
WOW

Appropriate analogy, seeing as it took me so long to finally find one. Not that I’ve found Yeti yet.
The coat on this monkey is amazing. Can’t get over how its fur resembles steel wool. I dub thee “Steely”!
Truly a sight to see. And always with that somber expression.
