Weavers are great little architects and seem to always be working on their orbed nests. They are called, weavers, in fact, because of the dexterity in which they weave together grasses and other nesting materials. There are many different species, most living in Africa. I photographed this masked weaver in Uganda. When multiple weavers nest in a single acacia tree, it looks like ornaments have been hung — earning the nickname African Christmas trees. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/4.5 at 1/400th of a second.
The whole field is a scam. Yeah they’re great architects but any decent architecture school is going to leave them with like $100,000 in student loans at 6%. Jeez. And how many firms are building nests these days? The jobs just aren’t there. Most of these Masked Weavers will end up living in studio apartments until they’re 40 and designing Target shelving displays, if they’re lucky.
The first thought I had upon setting my gaze upon this image was a “Christmas ornament”. In fact, this is an ornament that outshines most, to be sure. What a beautiful bird. It must be an amazing sight to see a number of Masked Weavers in a tree amongst their ornaments hanging from the limbs. I like it!

I would love to watch them assembling a nest. It does indeed look tightly woven.

Love it!
Thanks Donna.
