This lion had just finished lunch. With that bloody muzzle, he looked like he had just gotten caught doing something that he shouldn’t have. Gruesome as it may be, it’s all part of life on the African plains. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/250th of a second.
Maybe he was eating beets. Did you check to see if he was eating beets? That would explain why he looks so embarrassed. Being outed as the lion who eats beets would greatly diminish his social standing on the savannah.
What a great shot!!!! One of our guides on our safari told us that if you see a lion with a dirty face, he’s already eaten—in other words, he will be less likely to see you as food. The guy you captured has seen his share of skirmishes, based on all the notches in his ears. Marvelous sight.

You caught that shot just right.
Thanks Donna.

It was clearly a zebra, but you’re right, perhaps there were some sautéed beets in there that I didn’t see while photographing.
great pic. ) I wonder what kind big or little creature ,he had for lunch today. )
Thanks Michael. It was a zebra. Didn’t want to post any of those shots as they were pretty gruesome.
Some kinds of beets look like zebras.

Thanks Laura. That sounds like good advice.
