This lion’s mane almost looks like a wig. The males from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana are commonly called black-maned lions. Technically, all lions have a bit of black in their mane, but the ones in the Botswanan desert tend to be darker than the norm. This guy was settling in for good drink after feasting on an oryx (check out that massive belly). Nikon D700 with Nikkor 70-200mm lens (at 200mm) ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/640th of a second
What a shot, Sean! That lion has an odd look in his eyes and his pose looks kind of distorted, though I doubt that is the case as you captured this image with a 70-200mm, not an exaggerated wide angle lens. His eyes give the impression that he is in a sort of trance. Maybe he’s “drunk” on the big meal he just consumed. Anyway, it’s a fantastic photo. I love the water drops falling from his beard and the reflection in the water is a nice touch. Makes me want to head for the Kalahari.

Thanks Sue. My best lion viewing, oddly enough, was in the Kalahari Desert. And yes, I think this guy was delirious with that full belly.
Looks like he will be taking a 😴 nap also
Great Shot
Aunt Sue
No doubt about that.
Looks like he swollowed him whole. 😊
Fantastic! A long nap is due.
Yep, I was able to capture the entire pride after they drifted off to sleep about twenty yards away from the water hole.
Wow. . . mane and belly both fascinating! Also amazing (and scary) how well he matches his environment. . .
looks like this lion needs go on diet. , to about 100 lb. )
