A leatherback hatchling — just hatched — gets its bearings before making the arduous dash to the sea. Photographed in Grande Riviere on the island of Trinidad. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 17-35mm lens (at 17mm) ISO 800, f/5 at 1/640th of a second.
Thanks Jeane. It was late afternoon. This was one of the first hatchlings to emerge from a nest of about a hundred. I was still photographing them (two more nests opened up shortly after this one) until it got dark.
Footprints in the sand must seem like mountains to these little guys as they navigate to the ocean. So many hurdles to conquer—hopefully this one will grow to be a giant.

That’s a swell hatchling shot, Sean! Hoping our wee one circumnavigates our world many, many times!
