This lava lizard was in the process of shedding its skin, face first. Each island in the Galapagos has a slightly different version of the lava lizard, with slightly different skin colors to match the general environment of the given island. Hi Sean – a really fantastic pic. I also took a photograph of Himalayan Lizard in Ladakh with my Nikon 7000 and same Nikon 105mm f/2,8 ED VR AF lens. The lizard was having orange patches on both side of its head. It was near the crack in the rock, I got 2 or 3 photos but they are not as sharp as yours. We were 3 photographers, the Lizard vanished in the crack of the rock as it must have got scared.
This is a very artistic shot & knowing that he is shedding his face makes it even more so – I love how your soft focus area starts right past where his skin is shedding – it’s like he’s peeking through a fuzzier time in his past…

Great pic…..the colourful head of the lizard nicely contrasts with almost monochromatic background…..!!!!!
Great shot. Love the low angle. You must photograph a lot laying on the ground. So the lizard is having a facial. Love the eye makeup. 🙂
