Koalas have three fingers and two opposable thumbs on each of their two front paws. Both the fingers and thumbs have sharp pointed claws to assist in climbing, holding onto trees and gripping food. On the back paws, they have a grooming claw. Photographed at Hanson Bay on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. Nikon D200 with Nikkor 600mm f/5.6 manual focus lens, ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/30th of a second.
With all that the koalas went through to survive the Australian fires, especially on Kangaroo Island, I hope this one made it. Maybe this photo is symbolic of all the help they reached for. (Besides, I love close ups like this–it’s all in the details!)
What I didn’t notice until I took a second look at this photo, was the small black worms or centipedes snuggled into the trunk crevice just above this little one’s hand. Sometimes, we capture things we didn’t even know we saw!

Wow. Who knew? Well I guess you knew , but that’s very interesting. Learned something new today before 8am
I aim to please Mom.
Amazing photo & interesting information about them
I would have never known
Both go together well
Thanks Aunt Sue. Koalas don’t move much so quite the captive subject to explore more than just the traditional shots.
Are there any other parts of a koala or is it just the hand?
Mostly hands.
I love this shot and post! Thank you
Thanks Mary. Trying something a little different.
Please tell me the koala bomber will do something interesting with this! That is a request. That is a must.
KB has been conspicuously quiet as of late. Perhaps your challenge will bring him out of hiding.

I’m with Shardae, I would love a shout out from the Koala Bomber!
