No, they play very little of the day. In fact, the average koala sleeps 18 hours a day. During the few waking hours, they are usually eating leaves (almost exclusively eucalyptus). When awake, they appear very sleepy and not very alert — some say it’s because eucalyptus leaves make them high.
Hey Carol, Kangaroo Island was definitely my favorite part of Australia. I saw so many animals there (koalas, platypus, kangaroos, wallabies, seals, sea lions, echidnas, goanas, possums, penguins, etc.)
it’s great that your moms likes your work and she’s right, what is the koala story? do they just hang out all day eating eucalyptus and watching crocs? and what’s with the little guys worn out knee. i betcha that’s some sort of weird scent gland or something right?
why do they need such big claws?
Hey Steve, see my answer to my Mom about the koalas behavior. The thing on the knee is actually an out of focus highlight from the vegetation in the foreground. The claws are for clinging to the bark of the eucalyptus trees.

Adorable. Big ears, big nose, small beady eyes…….unique unto themselves. What is the koala story? Do just play all day?

I must admit that I love koalas. I got to spend some time on Kangaroo Island. I pretty much got my fill of koalas there.
