It looks like this mother king penguin is trying to eat the face off of her chick, but she was simply feeding the chick by regurgitating food. This was at Volunteer Point in the Falkland Islands. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 340mm) ISO 400, f/4 at 1/1250th of a second
I hadn’t a chance to respond earlier to this posting, Sean. Very sweet! I love whenever I get the chance to see a young one being fed by its parent. Just today we watched a cormorant feeding its young that was perched on a slightly submerged log near the mouth of the Eel River. A few weeks back I felt privileged to watch and photograph a Caspian tern trying in apparent vain to get its baby to accept “junior” food. The young tern just couldn’t seem to understand why mama wasn’t first chewing the small fish. It was pretty hilarious – the wee one kept crying out in obvious hunger. It is likely before day’s end, the baby took the fish from its mama’s mouth and learned the art of chewing its food!
