It was a windy day in the Falkland Islands and this king penguin was coping with all the blowing sand. Needless to say, I was thirty feet away in about the same position as the penguin, dealing with the same wind and sand. Nikon D800 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/7.1 at 1/200th of a second.
Amazing shot! I hate wind (probably from the days I wore contact lenses) and wind with sand would be awful!! I especially like the stripe of teal blue/green running across the middle of the shot — really sets off the colors of the penguin.
I’m not very good at it (protecting my cameras and lenses). I remember one point on this trip when I put my 200-400 mounted camera down and then turned around and saw it rolling down the beach. My cleaning/repair bill was steep after this trip.

I don’t remember exactly where I was that day. It’s possible I was also laying face down in sand with the wind ripping over me.
Wow! Yet another one of your many ‘national geo’ shots!
Thanks Rachel. The penguins make it easy because you always know where they’ll be — at their colony.

Thanks Karen, yes, I liked that out of focus aqua water line.
Beautiful shot, Sean! How in the world do you protect your camera & lenses from the sand in such windy conditions… and still get a clear shot?!?

That’s a swell image, Sean! Love the colors & love the bokeh!
