Volunteer Point in the Falkland Islands is the most accessible place in the world to see these iconic penguins (not that a four flight/two day journey is especially accessible). The Falklands are at the northern edge of the king’s territory, which extends south into Antarctica. So it looks like you were fairly close to this colony, but they don’t seem to be aware of you. Why is that? Are they assuming you are another type of bird? Are they not naturally curious about your scent?
Well, not that close on this shot, but about a foot away on yesterday’s shot. They get a bit nervous at first but once you sit down and stop moving, they forget you’re there, or even become curious and come toward you. The babies were pecking at my shoes as I was photographing the colony. They have never been hunted or harmed by humans so they have no fear of us. Kind of like all the animals on the Galapagos Islands.
Thanks Amanda. The weather changes very quickly in the Falklands but in general, the temperatures ranged between about 40 degrees and the high 50s at this time of year (their spring). I had everything from warm sunshine, to hail, to snow. And always a lot of wind. That being said, I was quite comfortable as long as I dressed for the weather.
