Feeling the heat, a black-tailed jackrabbit goes face to the sand and uses those big ears as heat regulators. The capillaries in the ears help to cool jackrabbits down on days like this one when it was 100 degrees plus in the Southern California desert. I look like that in 100 degree heat too! — Only without those great ears to cool me. Kudos, Sean, for getting down into the hot sand with him to get this picture!
I love the monotone coloring too, which draws our eye right to those pinkish ears. Lovely.

That’s a great capture of your Jackrabbit at rest on a hot Southern California day. Maybe it was trying to regroup from Easter!
Ha, could be. They like it hot, but that day was a little too hot.
Those ears also regulate his ability to hear the sick gossip that the scorpions are all tittering about.
Great capture
I’m guessing he’s probably very hot and tired from a busy Easter weekend 🐇
Great capture
(Especially for this Chinese year of the rabbit)

No doubt.
Great capture! Our northeast bunnies do the same when we get temps in the 100s.
So I imagine those ears are certainly up today (90 out there in CT).

Thanks Laura. Yes, always on the ground if the animals allow it.
