Here’s another look at a three-toed sloth. They sleep most of the day, but quite often you can see them hanging upside down giving themselves a good scratch. Sloths enjoy a symbiotic relationship with algae. Their fur gives the algae a great place to grow and the algae gives the sloths camouflage and nutrients through absorption. The algae also makes the sloth a magnet for moths, beetles and other insects. Nikon D810 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 1250, f/4 at 1/1000th of a second
Thanks Sue. I can never get enough of sloths. Wish I had better luck with the two toed version, but then again, Panama isn’t going anywhere so I hope to be back soon.
Thanks Rick. Had to add a few stops of light to this one given that strong backlight, but the nice things about sloths is that they give you time to get your exposures right.

Nice image of an other-worldly creature. It must be something to see these animals in person, Sean.

Such a fun image and very well-exposed in what must have been a difficult lighting situation.

Interesting to learn about the algae/sloth relationship.
great pic. ( does this thing like being water, ) ? or does like being dry. ?
Hi Michael, the sloths like to be dry, although they sleep through quite a bit of heavy rain.

Looks like he is having fun hanging there do they nest interred also that way
Hi Aunt Sue, yes, they can sleep hanging that way, but generally they curl up in a ball while sitting on a branch and hugging the trunk of a tree.
The Sloth is a wonderful beast. Glad to stay in touch via your photos.
