The indri, also called the babakoto, is the largest living lemur and can grow to about three feet tall and weigh more than twenty pounds. It can also turn that head around 180 degrees. It was a bit unnerving to see them in the trees and on the forest floor with their backs to me, but staring directly at camera. Great photo! We were surprised to come upon a large group of Indri at the same place (Andasibe-Mantadia) and so delighted when they all burst into song and gave us an amazing concert!
Their call truly is amazing. I would love to go back. I was there in 2007 but just heard that their numbers have decreased by 50% in just the last five years. Unfortunately, things don’t look good for all lemurs at the current rate of deforestation.
Ha! The same thing happens when I photograph snowy owls! You see the back of the owl, when suddenly the head turns around and the face stares at you. Reminds me of the movie The Exorcist, except a lot prettier to look at. Gives you the impression that they’re not quite put together correctly. 🙂

Yes, can’t say I didn’t think of the Exorcist myself. But the indri is far cuter than Linda Blair (nothing against Linda Blair).
