Dendropsophus ebraccatus is the proper name, but this guy is more commonly known as the hourglass treefrog due to the pattern on his back (which you can’t quite see in this photo). But as is usually the case, there’s yet another name — the pantless treefrog. Ebraccata means “without trousers” in Latin and it refers to the fact that there are bold patterns on the bottoms of the legs which are absent on the upper legs, ergo, no pants. So now you know. I vote for pantless (or pantsless), rather than hourglass or ebraccatus. Much easier to remember.. Has he no green coloring? I thought all frogs were green. He must be royalty with his gold splotches!
If I was this frog, I would choose a name that emphasized my positive qualities instead of the things I don’t have. So I’d probably call myself “The Still Wearing a Shirt Treefrog” or something like that.
