I missed the boat on Groundhog Day. A day late, but here’s a marmot. All marmots aren’t groundhogs, but all groundhogs are marmots. The guy pictured above is a hoary marmot (Marmota caligata) as opposed to a true groundhog (Marmota momax). Photographed years ago at Mount Rainier in Washington. There wasn’t any shadow that day either — as if any of us actually thought winter would be over before the middle of March. Nikon D300 with Nikkor 200-400mm lens (at 400mm) ISO 400, f/5.6 at 1/250th of a second.
When I leave my burrow and the first thing I see is a Sean Crane animal pic, then the tradition is that there will be an infinity of additional Sean Crane animal pics. But if I leave my burrow and I don’t see a Sean Crane animal pic then I just catch up on it the next day.
We had a groundhog live under a shed on our property when we lived in Michigan. I named his Oscar. He and I were good friends until he treated my bed of Black-eyed Susans as his personal salad bar! He ignored my protests.
What a great shot, Sean! Marmots are always entertaining to encounter. I love your little critter, amidst a splash of beautifully hued wildflowers. Very sweet!
