This is an old one from my film days. This dalmatian-coated harbor seal was enjoying the weather atop a rock just south of Monterey. I’m not sure of the camera settings as it was pre-digital for me, but most likely I was using my old 600mm manual focus f/5.6 lens and my Nikon F100 camera.
What a handsome dalmation! We see lots of these on the west coast. They are easy to identify from the much larger California sea lions that are typically dark brown in color and which sport ears. I’m pretty convinced that the cartoon character “Mr. Magoo” was inspired by harbor seals. Spot one with its eyes closed, and I think most would find it a baby step in imagination to envision a harbor seal sporting a pair of thick, round black frames. Nice capture, Sean!

Is this Dalmatian coat an aberration in the seal population? Or does it occur regularly rather than randomly? It is quite attractive actually.
It does occur regularly. They come in multiple varieties from pure grey to mottled to white like this guy with spots.
Nice shot Sean. ?’s: color negative or slide film? Film stock?
Slide film. Most likely Fuji Provia, which was my film of choice back then.
Woah!! Love this so much.
So beautiful. It looks fake the pattern is so pretty!
What an amazing photo, he has such a great facial expression!

The mottled seal mimics the rock mottled by the seaweed (or whatever it is). Nice symmetry.
Beautiful.
